Dr. Sara Escobar-Wiercinski is a Spanish professor and the founder of MLC Modern Languages Centre in Windsor, Ontario. She was born in Panama City, Panama, and since 1993 has been living in Windsor with her family. She also lived and worked in Montreal, Quebec for five years.
Sara holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Modern Languages and Literary Criticism from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (2014). She obtained her M.A. in Spanish Language and Culture from the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain (2001), completed her B.A. in Office Administration from the Universidad Santa María La Antigua (USMA) in Panama (1997), and graduated from St. Clair College, Windsor in Business Administration-Marketing (1998). She is an active researcher in second language education, linguistics, and Latin American literature. Sara has been teaching Spanish in Windsor since 1995. She worked at St. Clair College for almost 17 years, teaching and coordinating the Spanish program. Since 2007 she has served as an adjunct Spanish instructor at the University of Windsor, and at Wayne State University.
Additionally, Sara ran a private Spanish language business for almost ten years. Her services provided both in-house and on-site Spanish language instruction to children, teenagers, and adults. During those years she taught executives and other corporate personnel doing business in Latin America. She also delivered Spanish courses tailored for children at The Children House Montessori Schools in Windsor, LaSalle, and at the Montessori School of Windsor. Sara put her private teaching aside while she pursued her doctoral studies. During this time, she suffered a tragedy that tremendously impacted her and her family, the death of her only son, Luis Fernando Acosta Escobar, (1987-2007). Despite her heartbreaking loss, she continued with her doctoral studies and graduated in December 2014.
In September 2015, Dr. Escobar-Wiercinski opened the MLC Modern Languages Centre in Windsor, Ontario, offering language instruction in one space for all age groups: children, teenagers, and adults. In her marketing campaign, she dedicated two weeks to an open house, providing free trial lessons to those interested. During the early days of MLC, Sara provided instructions herself, offering Spanish lessons to children on Saturdays, several private classes for adults and teens, small group classes, tutoring classes, and on-site corporate training.
In April 2016, with a newer vision, Sara began to recruit a team of experienced and dedicated instructors and collaborators offering courses in Italian, French, English, German, Arabic, Spanish, and the "Train-the-Trainer" seminars and workshops for language instructors.
Starting in the Summer of 2016, MLC expanded its services abroad, offering Spanish language immersions in Spain, and cultural experiences in Portugal. Also, Sara commenced second language research on teaching and learning in Italy, France, and Germany.
In January 2017, Sara branched-out the services of the MLC Modern Languages Centre to Leamington, Ontario with Italian and Spanish classes.
In April 2020, due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Escobar-Wiercinski saw the need to change gears, switching from a static "centre" per se, to a fluid language consulting business. Now the MLC Modern Languages Centre provides specialised advice to students, instructors, and others, promoting diverse methods of teaching and learning modern languages in both local and international settings.
